Many metal recycling companies deal with a variety of appliances, such as refrigerators, dishwashers, and ovens, but one of the most common and profitable sources of metal they look for is HVAC scrap. If you run an HVAC company, you probably have a lot of experience with selling your scraps to a metal recycling company, but if you are a homeowner, you may not know much at all. Regardless of your level of knowledge on the subject, we have listed a couple of things you should know about HVAC scrap:

What You Should Know About HVAC Scrap

  • HVAC units contain valuable metal parts. If you are a homeowner and you have an HVAC unit that has failed, you should sell it to a metal recycling company, so you can get paid for its valuable metal parts, such as the copper coil. How much you get paid will depend on the price of that metal at the time as well as your location, but you can rest assured that you will be compensated fairly.
  • Refrigerants must be removed first. Refrigerants, or the fluids that absorb heat and provide cooling, are chemicals that can be harmful to human health when inhaled. In addition, releasing the refrigerants into the atmosphere is prohibited by the EPA and can lead to fines. Because of these risks, metal recycling companies don’t want your HVAC scrap unless the refrigerants have been removed by an HVAC professional.
